ConsenSys Re-Ignites zkEVM Race with Linea Launch

Ethereum software company ConsenSys has announced the launch of a public testnet for its zero-knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machine (zkEVM), which they have named “Linea.” This follows the successful deployment of a private testnet in December, which processed more than 350,000 transactions.

The Linea team asserts in a blog post that this innovation “represents the next evolution of ConsenSys zkEVM, powering a new generation of dapps built on Ethereum.” Furthermore, ConsenSys has confirmed that Linea will integrate natively with its widely-used MetaMask wallet and Truffle developer toolkit.

Zero-Knowledge Technology: The Future of Blockchain Scaling

Zero-knowledge (ZK) technology is increasingly seen as the ultimate solution for blockchain scaling. It has the potential to enhance transaction speeds and reduce associated fees, making it a valuable tool for the future of the blockchain ecosystem.

A zkEVM is a ZK rollup that is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), the software that is responsible for smart contract deployment. This compatibility implies that developers will not need to change current Ethereum apps, allowing them to effortlessly transfer to the new platform.

Linea’s introduction comes at a time when the zero-knowledge space in the Ethereum ecosystem is experiencing significant activity. Both Matter Labs and Polygon have recently released their own zkEVMs, marking a competitive race to bring Ethereum-compatible ZK rollups to users.

Furthermore, Linea’s compatibility with the Ethereum Virtual Machine will benefit both developers and end-users. For developers, it eliminates the need to reconfigure their applications when transitioning to the new platform, saving time and resources. For end-users, it ensures a smoother experience as they navigate the world of decentralized applications (dApps) built on the Ethereum network.
