Winklevoss-Backed Real Bedford FC Invests $4.5M in Bitcoin

Real Bedford FC (RBFC), a UK-based football club backed by Winklevoss Capital, has recently made headlines with its substantial investment in Bitcoin. Peter McCormack, the club’s founder, and a prominent crypto podcaster, revealed that the club has acquired 66.9 BTC for $4.5 million, demonstrating a bold step in integrating digital assets into sports. This purchase places Real Bedford at the forefront of the convergence between cryptocurrency and football, marking a significant milestone for both sectors.

Founded in 2021 by Peter McCormack, Real Bedford FC has rapidly become a symbol of innovation in football. McCormack’s ambition is to elevate the club from its non-league status to a prominent position in the football league, leveraging his expertise and connections within the cryptocurrency community. His vision for Real Bedford includes not just sporting success but also pioneering the use of digital assets in football financing.

The recent acquisition of 66.9 Bitcoin, valued at approximately $67,220 each, is a strategic move to secure the club’s financial future. The total investment of $4,500,420.69 reflects an average purchase price of $64,925 per Bitcoin.

This acquisition increases Real Bedford’s total Bitcoin holdings to 82.7 BTC, worth around $5.37 million. Out of this, 15.8 BTC is designated for football-related expenses, while the remainder is held in the club’s treasury.

This development follows an earlier $4.5 million investment by Winklevoss Capital, led by twin brothers Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss. Their involvement has added substantial financial backing and expertise to Real Bedford FC.

With both Winklevoss brothers now co-owners of the club alongside McCormack, the partnership underscores a commitment to blending traditional sports with modern financial technologies.

The trend of sports teams embracing cryptocurrency is gaining momentum. For instance, Southampton FC has partnered with Coingaming Group for sponsorship, while Paris Saint-Germain has collaborated with Socios.com to engage fans through digital tokens.

Similarly, FC Bayern Munich and AC Milan have secured partnerships with crypto firms Bitpanda and BitMex, respectively. Watford FC has also engaged with Stake.com for sponsorship.
