Crypto Scammers Hacks Microsoft India’s X Account Posting Fake Roaring Kitty Videos

Microsoft India’s X account was hacked by cryptocurrency scammers impersonating Roaring Kitty, well-known meme stock trader Keith Gill. This phishing site was created to steal assets from anyone who connects to their Bitcoin wallets and authorizes transactions.

What Happened After Microsoft India’s X Account Hacking

Hackers used a stolen Microsoft India X account to respond to tweets, referring visitors to a fake website called ‘presaIe-roaringkitty.com.’ This website falsely advertised an opportunity to purchase GameStop (GME) cryptocurrency in a presale.

However, it was designed to steal assets from everyone who linked their Bitcoin wallets and accepted transactions. Although these messages have been erased, the hackers continued to republish content from their account on the Microsoft India X account. The Cyber Express news published that the X account has not yet been restored.

Why Hackers Targeted Verified X Accounts

Hacking verified X accounts has become a trend in the crypto world, and this is not the first time. Microsoft India’s X account has a gold check as an officially verified entity on the site, giving the hijackers’ messages greater credibility.

There might be several explanations for this trend. First, accounts with many followers and a verified status appear more legitimate, making it simpler for fraudsters to fool others. Second, the sophisticated nature of these assaults, such as SIM swapping and social engineering, exposes flaws in current security mechanisms. Finally, cryptocurrency’s rising popularity makes it a desirable target for hackers.

Similar X Account HIjackings

On 9th Jan, the US Securities and Exchange Commission recognized that its verified X account was hacked due to a SIM-swapping attempt. The attack targeted the phone number associated with the account.

Other high-profile hacks have impacted the accounts of famous personalities such as Mandiant, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, and Donald Trump Jr., who are frequently tied to Bitcoin frauds. These kinds of hacks pose a serious security risk to X’s 528 million users.

Users, businesses, and regulators must collaborate to safeguard the digital world and guarantee that trust and security are emphasized.
