On Tuesday, El Salvador’s ambassador to the United States, Milena Mayorga, said that her country was in talks to create a “bitcoin embassy” in Texas. Mayorga tweeted on February 14 that the Central American nation wants a bitcoin embassy in “new ally” Texas.
According to Mayorga, a meeting took place between her, other El Salvadoran diplomats, and Texas Deputy Secretary of State Joe Esparza.
Mayora announced:
“We discussed the opening of the second Bitcoin embassy and the expansion of commercial and economic exchange projects. In 2022, El Salvador and the State of Texas had a commercial exchange of $1,244,636,983.”
Crypto friendly Texas
This new Bitcoin venture follows on the heels of the opening of the world’s first Bitcoin Embassy in the Swiss city of Lugano in October 2022. The two crypto-friendly governments have begun coordinating their efforts to set up a joint educational and research institute for the advancement of Bitcoin.
This comes as legislators in Texas are exploring a new bill that would create “a master plan for the evolution of the blockchain industry.” By enabling Bitcoin purchases to be made free of sales tax, among other things, the proposed legislation hopes to establish Texas as the nation’s crypto capital.
As has been widely documented, Texas has emerged as one of the most crypto-friendly states in the United States, having passed crypto-friendly legislation that aims to better adapt commercial laws to blockchain innovation and digital asset regulations. Some of the top cryptocurrency miners in North America are headquartered in Texas. These include industry giants like Riot Blockchain, Core Scientific, and Genesis Digital Assets.
