- Google’s Gemini, a new large language model, significantly enhances Bard and Pixel 8 Pro.
- Gemini excels in multimodal tasks and outperforms other AI models in industry benchmarks.
- Developers and enterprise customers will gain access to Gemini Pro through the Gemini API in Google AI Studio or Google Cloud Vertex AI.
Google has unveiled Gemini, its latest and most advanced large language model (LLM), marking a significant leap in AI technology. This new model, announced earlier this year at Google I/O, is now integrated into Bard, Google’s AI chatbot, and the Pixel 8 Pro smartphones, enhancing their capabilities significantly.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai detailed that the versatile AI model was available in Ultra, Pro, and Nano sizes, describing it as “one of the biggest science and engineering efforts” by the company. Developed through a collaborative effort, Gemini is multimodal and adept at handling various information types. The Nano version, ideal for on-device tasks, debuts in the Pixel 8 Pro with features like Summarise and Smart Reply, while plans are underway to integrate Gemini across Google’s broader product range, including Search and Chrome.
Developers and enterprise customers will gain access to Gemini Pro through the Gemini API in Google AI Studio or Google Cloud Vertex AI from December 13. Android developers can also utilize Gemini Nano via AICore in Android 14, starting with Pixel 8 Pro devices. Gemini Ultra, still undergoing safety checks, will be available for early experimentation and feedback before its broader rollout next year.
Bard, Google’s AI chatbot, will also benefit from Gemini, with a version of Gemini Pro enhancing its reasoning, planning, and understanding capabilities. Google plans to introduce Bard Advanced next year, powered by Gemini Ultra, to handle multimodal inputs more effectively.
Eli Collins, VP of Product at Google DeepMind, emphasized the strides made in “improving factuality” within Gemini yet candidly acknowledged the model’s ongoing challenge with “hallucinating.” He further lauded Gemini Ultra for its “exceptional performance,” particularly in the realms of massive multitask language understanding and advanced code generation in various programming languages.
In comparison tests, Gemini Pro outperformed GPT-3.5, OpenAI’s LLM, in six out of eight industry-standard benchmarks, demonstrating its superior capabilities. Bard with Gemini Pro is now available in English in 170 countries and territories, with plans for further expansion.
