Malaysian Authority Destroys 985 Bitcoin Rigs Worth $452,500

Malaysian authorities have intensified their crackdown on illegal cryptocurrency mining by destroying nearly 1,000 bitcoin mining rigs. The operation, which took place in the Perak Tengah district, involved the use of a steamroller to crush 985 mining machines valued at approximately 1.98 million Malaysian ringgits ($452,500). This move reflects Malaysia’s ongoing efforts to combat power theft linked to crypto mining, which has become a significant issue in the region.

Enforcement Operations and Recent Arrests

The destroyed rigs were confiscated during enforcement operations conducted from 2022 through April of this year. This drastic action follows a series of similar measures aimed at curbing illegal power usage associated with bitcoin mining. Authorities in Sepang district arrested seven individuals suspected of operating bitcoin mining operations that involved stealing electricity.

The crackdown is part of a broader effort by Malaysian officials to address the extensive power theft problem exacerbated by cryptocurrency mining activities. According to Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, the Deputy Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, crypto miners in Malaysia have stolen at least RM3.4 billion ($777 million) worth of electricity between 2018 and 2023. This figure highlights the scale of the issue and underscores the urgent need for effective enforcement.

Southeast Asia Embraces Crypto: Singapore Tops, Timor-Leste Catches Up

Moreover, the move to destroy the mining rigs comes as part of a regional trend. Since China’s ban on cryptocurrency mining in 2021, many mining operations have relocated to countries with attractive electricity rates and supportive infrastructure. Southeast Asian nations, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Laos, and Thailand, have become popular destinations for these miners due to their competitive energy prices and established infrastructure.

However, the influx of mining operations has led to significant challenges. In addition to power theft, the environmental impact and strain on local resources are growing concerns. Consequently, Southeast Asian governments are ramping up their enforcement efforts to manage these issues effectively.
