RTFKT COO Nikhil Gopalani fell victim to a sophisticated phishing assault, losing almost $200,000 worth of NFTs. On January 3, Gopalani tweeted that he had fallen victim to what looked to be a phishing fraud and had lost his NFT collection, which included Clone X NFTs and things from other collections. The hacker was posing as an Apple representative.
RTFKT is a next-generation cryptocurrency brand that is making waves in the digital wearable industry and generated content in collaboration with the artist Takashi Murakami. In December 2021, Nike purchased RTFKT for a significant amount of money.
According to the data from OpenSea, the thief utilized two wallets in order to take Gopalani’s NFTs, which are valued around 173,000 dollars. This contains a total of 11 CryptoKicks, as well as 19 CloneX NFTs, 18 RTFKT Space Pods, and 17 Loot Pods. Moreover, data from Etherscan also reveals that just $0.11 worth of Ether is now stored in the wallet that is associated with Gopalani.
RTFKT Chief Technology Officer Samuel Cardillo, when questioned about the hack, cited legal reasons for his refusal to speak. But he stressed that major IT firms like Apple and Microsoft would never initiate contact with a consumer to inquire for a password, private key, or other types of sensitive data.
In his words:
“All I can say is: be aware that companies such as Microsoft and Apple will never ask you for your password, your private key nor any other forms of private information via phone nor emails.”
There is a possibility that Gopalani inadvertently divulged secret information to a hacker who was pretending to be an Apple official.
