SUI Introduces Zklogin for Users to Login With Google & Twitch

A piece of news in stride towards enhancing the accessibility of blockchain technology to mainstream users, Sui, a pioneering Layer 1 blockchain, announced the launch of “zkLogin”. With zkLogin, users can enter the Sui ecosystem by authenticating themselves through their existing accounts on platforms such as Google, Facebook, Twitch, and other third-party providers.

Sui plans to extend this integration to include major platforms like Microsoft, Apple, WeChat, and Amazon in the near future.  This empowers users to access decentralized applications (dApps) seamlessly, employing their familiar social media accounts, and eliminating the need for complex wallet installations and seed phrase management.

Adeniyi Abiodun, Co-Founder and CPO of Mysten Labs expressed the significance of this development, noting,

Too many individuals – whose everyday lives would benefit from blockchain technologies – are irretrievably lost at our doorstep, frustrated at installing web3 wallets and managing seed phrases. zkLogin on Sui applies a login pattern that is well known, simple, and effective to this new arena. This technology, now on Sui, is the biggest opportunity so far to remove these barriers and onboard a billion new users to the next generation of connected experiences.

zkLogin is a Web3 authentication solution that enables end users to access decentralized applications (dApps), using social networking platforms. Users can join the Sui ecosystem using zkLogin without having to install a wallet or manage seed phrases.

Users availing themselves of zkLogin will retain the privacy and ownership advantages inherent in blockchain-based applications, which are conspicuously absent in conventional web applications. Greg Siourounis, Managing Director of the Sui Foundation, emphasized the transformative potential of zkLogin, stating,

By enabling users to access dApps with the social logins they have grown comfortable using, zkLogin removes a major hurdle for bringing the benefits of blockchain-based applications to billions of mainstream users. I am looking forward to seeing what the talented builders and developers in the Sui community will create using this new network capability.

At its core, zkLogin leverages zero-knowledge proof technology, which allows a user to prove the validity of an assertion without divulging sensitive information beyond the fact that the assertion is true. By combining zk-SNARKs and JSON Web Tokens, zkLogin on Sui enables users to verify their identity and wallet ownership without disclosing the actual credentials required to access their accounts.
