Vitalik Buterin Urges Ethereum to Build Sanctuary Technology

Vitalik Buterin said Ethereum must build “sanctuary technologies” that protect freedom, privacy, and collaboration. He shared the view on X on March 3rd. Buterin said many people worry about global surveillance, war, and corporate power. He also said Ethereum still plays a limited role in improving daily life during these pressures.
Buterin wrote that many conversations now revolve around fears about government control, technology platforms, and social media conflicts. At the same time, he said people question whether Ethereum meaningfully improves everyday freedom and security.
He stated that acknowledging problems remains easy. Creating a plan that moves forward remains much harder.
Concerns About Technology and Global Pressures
Buterin described growing concerns about the direction of global technology and politics. These concerns include surveillance by governments and corporations, expanding conflict, and increasing corporate influence over digital platforms.
He also mentioned “tech enshittification,” where large technology systems degrade over time. He said many people see social media turning into a constant memetic battlefield.
At the same time, artificial intelligence interacts with these forces. Buterin said AI now plays a role across surveillance, social networks, and corporate platforms. Despite these developments, he said Ethereum appears largely absent from improving real-world conditions connected to these concerns.
He noted that several technologies currently provide direct practical benefits. Starlink offers resilient internet access. Open-weight language models allow local AI computing. Signal provides encrypted communication. Community Notes adds collaborative fact-checking.
These examples, he said, show tools that actively help people navigate modern digital pressures.

Ethereum’s Limited Role in Everyday Life
Buterin wrote that Ethereum’s limited social impact concerns many idealistic developers within the ecosystem. The issue weighs heavily on those who hoped the technology would contribute more directly to human freedom. He said he never worried about political memecoins launching on other blockchains. He also dismissed gambling-style applications moving across faster networks.
Instead, he said the deeper concern lies elsewhere. Ethereum has not yet played a strong role in protecting digital freedom during recent technological conflicts. Some people suggest focusing entirely on finance. They argue Ethereum should concentrate only on decentralized financial systems.
Buterin responded that financial freedom remains important. Yet he said financial systems alone cannot solve broader problems related to surveillance, control, and digital power. Financial independence might reduce certain risks. Still, he said it would leave many deeper global concerns unresolved.
This raises a central question: can decentralized technology offer protection beyond financial systems?
The Concept of Sanctuary Technologies
Buterin proposed a different direction for Ethereum’s future role. He suggested developers should focus on building “sanctuary technologies.”
He described these tools as open-source systems that help people live, communicate, and collaborate despite outside pressure. These systems would also allow communities to organize and manage economic activity. The goal, he said, is not to reshape the world entirely through blockchain governance. Instead, the goal involves reducing the possibility of total control by any single power.
He described the idea as “de-totalization.” The concept aims to prevent total victory or total defeat in digital conflicts. Under this framework, Ethereum provides shared digital space without centralized ownership. That space allows independent groups to interact and coordinate.
Buterin gave several examples of structures that create this digital space. Money represents one example. Multisignature wallets that persist beyond a single individual provide another. Markets and governance mechanisms also function as persistent digital objects.
He said Ethereum should expand development across the full technology stack. That effort includes applications, wallets, operating systems, hardware layers, and security systems. Buterin also wrote that technology requires real users. Therefore, Ethereum developers should focus on people and institutions that need resilient digital infrastructure.
He added that many potential allies exist outside the cryptocurrency sector. Collaboration across these communities could expand the sanctuary technology ecosystem.
