Ross Ulbricht Thanks Trump After Pardon and Freedom

  • Ross Ulbricht was pardoned by Donald Trump after serving more than 11 years in prison.
  • His Silk Road conviction sparked discussions on justice and digital freedoms for years.
  • Ross now plans to focus on family and rebuilding his life after the release.

Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht, freed after facing years in prison, thanked President Trump for granting him a full pardon. Found guilty in 2015 for operating the dark web marketplace, Ross expressed gratitude for the second chance and praised Trump as “a man of his word” in his first public statement.

A Second Chance After Eleven Years

Ulbricht expressed his gratitude in a video on X, thanking him for the new opportunity and restoring his future. The pardon was described as a triumph for freedom and a chance for reflection after years of incarceration.  He said,

“Last night, Donald Trump granted me a full pardon. I was doing life without parole, and I was locked up for more than 11 years, but he let me out. I’m a free man now. So let it be known that Donald Trump is a man of his word. Thank you so much, President Trump, for giving me this amazing blessing. I am so, so grateful to have my life back, to have my future back, to have this second chance.”

The Silk Road platform allowed users to trade illegal goods anonymously using Bitcoin. While his lawyers claimed Ulbricht handed control of the site to others after its inception, he was convicted of managing the marketplace. Critics of his prosecution argued his punishment was excessive, reflecting government overreach in handling digital commerce crimes.

A Political and Libertarian Turning Point

Ulbricht’s pardon showcased Donald Trump’s transactional politics, as libertarians had lobbied for his release. Many party members supported Trump in return for his promise to review the case. Announcing the pardon, Trump called Ulbricht’s sentence “ridiculous” and criticized prosecutors as politically motivated.

This development underscores shifting societal views on digital liberties, accountability, and justice. For years, Ulbricht’s case symbolized debates on the ethics of government interference in decentralized technologies.

At the Libertarian Party’s national conference, Trump vowed to commute Ulbricht’s sentence, aligning with his broader agenda to support cryptocurrency. Trump’s relaxed approach toward crypto regulation aims to establish the U.S. as a global hub for digital assets.
