Decentralized video delivery network, Theta announced the alpha release of its Theta EdgeStore on Thursday. This new component of the Theta Edge Node software is run by tens of thousands of users worldwide and serves as a decentralized, append-only storage network for permanent web content, utilizing content addressing and key/value storage.
“We’re excited to share the alpha release of Theta EdgeStore, a crucial part of the 2023 Theta roadmap.” Theta Network wrote on Twitter.
Introducing decentralized Edge Storage for the permanent web, super critical building block for Web3, nice work @Theta_Network team! https://t.co/xnGQ3K8o00

Theta is a decentralized video delivery network powered by users, running on a dedicated blockchain (Theta Network). Its value proposition is to reduce the costs of content delivery networks by effectively creating a mesh network of shared content.
The announcement stated that Theta Edge Nodes already have the capability for decentralized streaming and encoding/transcoding, but with the addition of decentralized storage, the Edge Node will now provide a full end-to-end decentralized service for not only video streaming but also for any other type of file transfer or streaming.
The EdgeStore library implements “flexible sharding” which is an extension of the Chord protocol for DHTs. EdgeStore node stores permanent data shards assigned to it and also caches popular content locally. As a result, it acts as a decentralized content delivery network for various types of files.
Theta EdgeStore can be used for various decentralized applications such as permanent storage of NFT assets, training data for AI, layer 2 scaling solutions, and storage backend for web3 DApps and Metaverse digital assets.
Similar to Edge Node ingestors service, during this test phase storage is facilitated by a group of Theta Edge Nodes currently run by Theta Labs in cloud instances.reads the announcement.
After testing is completed and the service is found to be efficient, it will be transitioned to run on Theta users’ public Edge Nodes, providing more opportunities for Edge Node operators to earn TFUEL through storage services for the Edge Network.
The team notes that the updated Theta roadmap for 2023 and beyond will soon be released, outlining the deployment of EdgeStore and the final version that can be adopted by businesses globally.
