Jack Dorsey’s Crypto Past Sparks Satoshi Nakamoto Claims

  • Jack Dorsey’s cryptographic background aligns with key Bitcoin creation events.
  • Dorsey’s engagement in the cypherpunk movement strengthens the Bitcoin inventor theory.
  • The first Bitcoin transaction in January 2009 coincided with Dorsey’s mother’s birthday.

Widespread speculation about Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey possibly being Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto has resurfaced. The theory regarding Jack Dorsey as Satoshi Nakamoto re-emerged with new details presented on February 15, 2025, by Seán Murray, president of the financial news platform deBanked. Murray assembled a set of evidence that linked Dorsey to Bitcoin genesis originating from his activities within the early cryptographic movement of the 1990s.

Early Connections to Cryptography

Dorsey’s historical cryptography engagement and membership in the cypherpunk movement strengthen the Bitcoin inventor theory. Murray noted that Dorsey attended the University of Missouri-Rolla, where he wore a T-shirt featuring Adam Back, an early Bitcoin pioneer. The concepts of cryptography and pseudonymity essential to Bitcoin’s creation caught Dorsey’s attention. Some evidence suggests that Bitcoin’s creation stemmed from his work developing submission software for academic research papers that required technical capabilities.

The programming languages Python, C, and Lisp that Dorsey has worked with demonstrate his familiarity with cryptographic principles that he could apply to Bitcoin’s creation. Dorsey’s technical abilities were further demonstrated through his participation in the Cypherpunk mailing list and his manifesto about leaving no trace, which mirrored Bitcoin’s core design principles. These early indicators of Dorsey’s technical background and involvement in crypto culture suggest that he may have been a key figure in Bitcoin’s creation.

Personal Ties to Bitcoin’s Timeline

The theory defines important events throughout Bitcoin’s development by relating them to Dorsey’s personal milestones. On January 11, 2009, Bitcoin witnessed its first transaction, which coincidentally occurred on the same day as Dorsey’s mother’s birthday. The last block Satoshi mined occurred on a date that coincided with Dorsey’s father’s birthday. Satoshi’s Bitcoin forum account registration happened on November 19 which turns out to be Dorsey’s birth date. These connected dates speculate that personal events in Dorsey’s life corresponded with major Bitcoin developments.

The theory continues by pointing out that Bitcoin’s original source code included a timestamp, which matched the time Dorsey once listed on his Twitter account. According to Murray, the creation of a Bitcoin vanity address beginning with “jD2m” refers to the San Francisco location where Dorsey lived, 2 Mint Plaza. The theories are part of numerous circumstantial evidence suggesting a possible connection between Satoshi Nakamoto and Dorsey.
